Sub-Saharan migrants climb over a metallic fence that divides Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla on Friday March 28, 2014. Several hundred African migrants tried to cross barbed-wire border fences to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco but most were blocked by Moroccan police or pushed back by the Spanish Guardia Civil as a handful managed to remain in European soil. In early 2014 thousands of migrants seeking a better life who couldn't afford to pay to cross the Mediterranean sea aboard a rubber raft to get to Europe, were living illegally in the forests of north Morocco hoping they could enter Melilla and Spain's other north African coastal enclave, Ceuta. More than 400 African migrants managed to jump the barbed-wire border fence in SpainÌs North African enclave of Melilla, hundreds of others were blocked and beaten back by Moroccan police while the rest were pushed back by the Spanish Guardia Civil. During the pre-dawn border storming, cries of pain and noises of people being hit could be heard as police from both sides tried to prevent dozens of the sub-Saharan migrants from entering the city from Morocco. Salam Aldeen, volunteer helping migrants in Lesbos, holds up a baby as an other volunteer tries to help him awkwardly, while several families disembark from a dinghy after their arrival from the Turkish coast to the Greek island of Lesbos, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015. Salam was absurdly accused of human trafficking by Greek coastguards in January 2016 as he was helping on migrants rescue operations in the island of Lesbos. (© Santi Palacios)

Men from Morocco and Bangladesh react on an overcrowded wooden boat, as aid workers of the Spanish NGO Open Arms approach them in the Mediterranean Sea, international waters, off the Libyan coast, Friday, Jan. 10, 2020. The different NGO working in the central Mediterranean sea are facing more difficulties every year to perform migrants rescue operations due to the lack of cooperation of the European authorities, especially Maltese and Italians, despite being carrying on a difficult task that should be a responsibility of the EU Governments.  (© Santi Palacios)

Migrants from different African nationalities rest aboard a Spanish NGO Open Arms rescue ship, as the vessel heads to the Italian island of Lampedusa, early Sunday, March 5, 2017. By the time I shot this picture, a team of aid workers had already rescued more than 800 people during a 2-week rescue mission in international waters, off the Libyan coast, as thousands of migrants, mostly Africans but also from Middle East and South Asia, were leaving Libya and trying to reach Europe aboard overcrowded and precarious rubber and wooden boats that could had never crossed the Mediterranean successfully.
